(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman refused to allow a mission from the European parliament to visit Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
According to Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper on Friday, head of the European parliament's foreign affairs committee Elmar Brok asked the Israeli ambassador to the European Union to arrange a visit for him and European lawmakers to visit Palestinian prisoners and check on the incarceration conditions in Israeli jails.
Later, the ambassador was told his request for a prison visit was rejected by the Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman, who said that he would permit such a visit if an Israeli delegation was allowed to visit the prisons in Europe.
The Israeli newspaper noted that the European request took place in coordination with Palestinian parties as part of an international campaign in solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners.
There are about 5,000 Palestinian prisoners exposed to different punitive measures and abuses by jailers and interrogators in Israeli jails, according to human rights groups.
